YouTube has launched a new system based on artificial intelligence to determine user ages. The developed machine learning-based algorithm will analyze whether an account belongs to a teenager and tailor content access on the platform accordingly. Initially tested with a limited group of users in the US, the system is planned to be rolled out more broadly if it proves successful.
YouTube begins age estimation
The new system estimates age based on data such as users’ content preferences, search history, and the length of time their account has been active. If a user is identified as a “teenager” based on these analyses, personalized ads are disabled on the account, digital wellness tools are activated, and access to some content is restricted.
The system was developed as part of a broader moderation policy aimed specifically at protecting young users from harmful content and targeted ads.
In 2021, YouTube took the first steps toward moderated youth accounts, implementing various security measures for child and teen users. It was reported that the new AI application has been in use in some markets for some time and has received positive feedback.
However, the most controversial aspect of the system is the responsibility placed on adult users to verify their age in the event of an incorrect assessment by the AI. If the system incorrectly classifies an adult as under 18, the user must prove their identity with an official document or credit card.
This practice differs from Meta’s policy, which similarly uses AI for age determination. Meta allows users to manually correct incorrect age estimates made by the system.
